Attractive Opposites

Through their respective media--image and word--Kevin Calhoun and Eric G. Wilson explore strange relationships between life's great oppositions: innocence and experience, melancholy and joy, order and chaos.  Both artists wonder how the dark informs the light, and the light makes darkness.  Out of their double vision emerges this startling insight: the emptier the soul, the more abundant the filling.

Kevin Calhoun is a Winston-Salem artist whose show Basement Shapes is currently on display at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA).  He has also exhibited at the Lincoln Center in New York City, and Asheville's American Folk Art Center.  In addition, he has shown in several galleries in Winston-Salem: Salem College, the Sawtooth Center, the Milton Rhodes Gallery, Urban Artware, the Realis Gallery, and the Domicile Gallery.

Eric G. Wilson is the publisher of several books, including Against Happiness, a Los Angeles Times bestseller and featured on NBC's Today Show.  His work has appeared in the New York Times, Salon, the Oxford American, and the Paris Review Daily.  He teaches creative writing and Romantic poetry at Wake Forest University.  His most recent work, the story collection Polaris Ghost, blends David Lynch and William Blake to explore sexuality, parenting, addiction, depression, and how we make meaning from life's fragments.

Adam Lefevre + Johnathan Lindsay

Adam Lefevre paints beautiful layered abstractions. His gestural paint strokes are bold and expressive. After building many layers of color and pattern Adam adds line work that represents things that are important to him that day like backpacks, birthday candles, milkshakes, and Ferris wheels.

Jonathan Lindsay covers wooden objects with bright patterns and symbols from his life. Highway signs, interstate signs, sewing objects, laundry items, food, weather, and more can be found in his meticulous works of art. His canvas paintings often portray family and friends represented in bright, joyful, stylized detail.

Jonathan and Adam are both artists of the Enrichment Center and Gateway Gallery. They work after hours at the Electric Pyramid Studios with mentor Laura Lashley and show their work at the Red Dog Gallery, Krankies Cafe, and Camino Bakery.
